Description
Andersonville Prison, the very term caused Union Soldiers to shrink with fear. A prison that was designed to hold 10,000 prisoners, but at its height there were over 45,000 held captive here. This listing by Dorence Atwater of the 2nd New York Cavalry was only 19 years old when he came to the prison and he became the "keeper" of the books to record the deaths. His listing, given here, contains almost 12,500 soldiers who died while a prisoner. The listing is given by State of origin and then alphabetical in that state. Here for the first time is a full alphabetical index to all the names showing 12,429 total.
