La alegoría más clara de Hemingway la constituye el viejo y el mar. En primer lugar, está la obstinación del anciano pescador contra su mala suerte: ochenta y cuatro días sin poder pescar un pez. Luego, habiendo pescado uno enorme, la lucha de ambos, frente a frente, solos y en mar adentro. Finalmente, el triunfo y el fracaso del hombre: retorna a tierra llevando al gran pez, pero en el trayecto de vuelta los tiburones han devorado al animal y el viejo pescador regresa sólo con la enorme espina descarnada.
