Both sides of an illicit romance begun by happily married father Noah Solloway and married waitress Alison Lockhart are examined in this award-winning series. The effects of their liaison reverberate through every corner of their lives, beginning with their respective spouses, Helen and Cole. But betrayal is not the darkest secret that emerges as an ongoing murder investigation overturns more relationships. No one escapes the consequences as lust, love, grief, and guilt continue to clash.

Season One. Two married couples; one decimating extramarital love affair. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and novelist who is happily married, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of a tragedy. The provocative drama unfolds when Alison and Noah meet in Montauk at the end of Long Island.

Season two. With a murder unsolved and a betrayal exposed, the truth is suspect in 12 ... episodes. Shifting between the perspectives of Noah, Alison, Helen, and Cole, the story now reveals the complex family ties, passionate betrayals and vengeful emotions that have resulted from the illicit summer liasion. And as the two estranged couples try individually to plan for the future, a new series of deceptions will once again force them to question everything they believed.

Season three. Three years after Noah's shocking admission of guilt at the murder trial of Scott Lockhart, he attempts to restart his life, but the damage wrought by his past decisions has made him a ghost of his former self. Alison has been raising daughter Joanie alongside Cole and Luisa in Montauk, but Alison's past continues to rear its ugly head as Cole and Luisa attempt to build their own future.

Season four. Helen and Noah have moved following Vik's job offer, and they're butting heads more than ever. Meanwhile, a flash-forward scene with Noah and Cole indicates that someone is missing and that there have been a string of intense events leading up to that moment.

Season five. In the aftermath of horrific events, Noah and Helen try to come to terms with the consequences of their choices. Just when things seem to have stabilized, a chance encounter with someone from the distant past sets in motion a sequence of events that brings them both to their knees. They realize they must face their past in order to truly move on. And some years in the future, Alison and Cole's now adult daughter Joanie attempts to piece together the truth about what happened to her mother.
