Describes the life of explorer Christopher Columbus and discusses his voyages to the islands now known as the West Indies. Growing up in Genoa, Italy, Christopher Columbus studied geography and astronomy before going to sea in the Mediterranean region as a young man. He gained the support of the royalty of Spain and set sail under the Spanish flag with the idea of traveling to Asia by a westward route. Columbus landed in the Caribbean, thinking he had reached the eastern edge of Asia. His legacy is a complicated one that includes spearheading the European presence in the Americas and initiating the exploitation of the land and indigenous peoples of the "New World."
